EPHESIANS 5:22-33

Ephesians 5:22 - “Wives submit yourselves”

submit” – to arrange under, be in subjection, to submit to one’s control, to
yield to one’s admonition or advice, to obey

Wives submit:

1. unto your own husband
2. as unto the Lord

Lord” – (kurios) – he to whom a person or thing belongs, Master, Owner
              Colossians 3:18


Ephesians 5:23 - “For the husband is”


1. head of the wife
2. as Christ is head of the church
3. is the Saviour of the body
    lst Corinthians 11:13

the head of the wife” – Master Lord, anything supreme, chief, prominent,
(loss of the head destroys life)

even as” – like, same

as Christ ( the Anointed One, Messiah) is the head of the Church” – the assembly

and he is the Saviour” – deliverer, preserver

of the body” – physical body


Ephesians 5:24 - “Therefore as the church is”

subject” – military term, “to arrange (troop divisions) in a military fashion under the
command of a leader

unto Christ” – the anointed one

Ephesians 5:24 “so let the wives be to their own husbands”

in every thing” – all things, all manner of, whatsoever, individually ( each,
every, all) and collectively

1. lst Corinthians 7:13-16 – unbelieving husband
2. Acts 5:27-29 – obey God rather than man
3. lst Corinthians 11:7 – woman is the glory of the man
4. Ephesians 5:22 – as unto the Lord

Ephesians 5:25 “ Husbands love your wives”

love” – (agape) God’s Holy Spirit love

Husband’s Love:

1. even as Christ loved the church
2. gave himself for it ( died for it)

even as” – like, the same as

Ephesians 5:26 “ That he might sanctify”

sanctify” – to separate from profane things and dedicate to God, hallow, make
Holy

cleanse it” – make clean, to free from the defilement of sin, to purify`

with the washing of water” – bathing, bath

by the word” – saying, thing spoken

1. John 15:3 – clean through the word
2. James 1:21-25 – save your souls


Ephesians 5:27 “ That he might present it”

to himself a glorious church” – held in great esteem, honorable, of high repute


Ephesians 5:27 “Not having”

1. Spot – defile, moral blemish, fault, stain, impurity
2. Wrinkle – sign of age and decay
3. Any such thing – like, as the previous

should be holy” – most holy thing, saint

and without blemish” – without blame, faultless, without rebuke

 

Ephesians 5:28 “So ought men”

to love their wives” – ( agape) love of God

as their own bodies” – one flesh

loveth his wife loveth himself” – we cannot love others until we learn to
love ourselves ( Matt. 22:37-40)

 

Ephesians 5:29 “For no man”

ever yet hated his own flesh” – his own body

1. nourisheth – feeds, bring up to maturity, to nurture
2. cherisheth – cares for, keep warm, foster with tender care

even as the Lord the church” – Jesus feeds and cares for us very tenderly

 

Ephesians 5:30 “ For we are”

Members of


1. his body – lst Cor. 12:12, Ephesians 1:22-23
2. his flesh – lst Cor. 6:15-17
3. his bones

Ephesians 5:31 “For this cause”

1. Leave his father and mother
2. Shall be joined unto his wife
3. Shall be one flesh – lst Cor. 6:15-17

Ephesians 5:32 “ This is a great mystery”

mystery” – hidden thing, secret

speak concerning Christ and the church” – the marriage relationship on
earth is the example of the spiritual relationship with Christ
now and in the future.

Ephesians 5:33 ‘Nevertheless let everyone of you”

in particular love his wife” – love of God

even as himself” – feed and care for

the wife see that she reverence her husband” - fear, be afraid, reverential obedience
